«…Badalyan provided me with the surprise of the season two years ago in a performance at Novaya Opera of the title role in Richard Wagner’s “Lohengrin” that was vocally superior and only a shade less idiomatic than that of a well-known German tenor heard not long before at the celebrated Wagner festival in Bayreuth, Germany.
Tackling other repertoire on Tuesday, Badalyan displayed superb style and technique, as well as power, where necessary, in the most famous of all Russian tenor arias, that of Lensky from the second act of Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin,” and went on to deliver a finely nuanced account of “Pourquoi me reveiller” from Jules Massenet’s “Werther.»

“… I saw invited to watch the performance of Lohengrin sang by Moscow Soloist Khachatur Badalyan in the title role, whose Lohengrin at Novaya Opera is well known in the capital. His performance is not quite traditional for Russia, with its history of such interpreters as Sobinov, Kozlovsky, Pluzhnikov, which was characterized by a bright, silvery, and at the same time extremely lyrical sound. Badalyan sings his hero with a dark, matt sound, rather in the European tradition, where the part of Lohengrin is usually sung by spinto tenors. His climaxes are are sufficiently sonorous and bright. The final monologue «In fernem Land» the singer begins with hidden, muffled sound, surprising with this kind of approach, but then deploys the voice in its power, thus making the effect much greater. It should be noted that Badalian sang with good German pronunciation, which gave to the performance a considerable glossiness… “

Prepremier and premier evenings revealed a number of bright discoveries.
